WINDY HILLS WORKS OUT
|
The Windy Hills Health and Fitness Initiative was born along with some other city programs, in an effort to build community and bring neighbors together in positive activities. We are, as we have been since the eighteenth century, a community of "doers". The Health and Fitness Initiative seeks to establish and maintain programs that bring our community residents of all ages together in healthy physical activities that promote wellness. We seek to keep these activities free of charge whenever possible, and in cases where fees are charged, they are paid directly to the professional or certified instructor of the specific activity. Each activity has been met with a great deal of enthusiasm. Specific activities are as
follows:
1)
"WALK THE LOOP"--A self directed program for all ages, to walk the perimeter of the city of Windy Hills on its new sidewalks. The sidewalks will be marked with in lh mile increments, and when the entire 3
½ mile "loop" is covered the participants may go to city hall and receive a "T" shirt printed with the words "1 WALKED THE LOOP." There will be "T" shirts for additional increments such as 10 or 25 "loops." Mike Skelton leads this activity.
2)
WINDY HILLS COOKS HEALTHY-
Demonstrations
of healthy seasonal "recipes" will be showcased at the FRESH MARKET, on the comer of Rudy Lane and Brownsboro Roads. Louisville's own Mary Wheatley, of the popular "COOKING WITH MARY" CLASSES WILL DEMONSTRATE, and The Fresh Market will
provide food for the demonstrations. We have four sessions planned--June, July, September and October, and hope to do more by popular demand. Fees will be charged according to the number of participants. These will be paid directly to Mary. Sue Spencer handles this along with Mary and the Fresh Market.
3) EXERCISE FOR SENIORS--
Certified
instructor, Carolyn Anderson has invited Windy Hills Seniors to join her existing class at Calvin Church. The facility is donated, and the participants pay the instructor. Equipment such as a Yoga mat and small weights are needed, and participants will provide their own. Just "show up" at Calvin on Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M .. The first session is free, then 18 sessions are $54.00. Sue Spencer works with Carolyn Anderson on this activity.
4)
GENTLE AND BEGINNING YOGA--Another existing program that Carolyn Anderson has invited Windy Hills residents to participate in. Again, the facility at Christ Church Methodist is donated, and participants pay the instructor and provide a few pieces of equipment. Meets Tuesday and Thursday morning, 8:30-9:30 A.M, rm. 005, on the preschool side. First session is free, then 10 sessions for $55.00 Sue Spencer and Carolyn Anderson
5) WATER AEROBICS-is planned for the summer, and we will have notices out next week. We have a certified instructor who will be back from her vacation then, and have secured the use of the pool at Coach Gate Condominiums. We will begin with one session a week on Tuesday evenings, at 6:00P.M. Watch your email and check the City of Windy Hills web site for more information. Cheryl Cooper spearheads this activity. We continue to develop our programs for Health and Fitness, and will be announcing some exercise programs in the early evening, for those who work or are occupied during the day. I would like to have some help from parents in designing kid-friendly programs --I'd love to hear your ideas about things for the kids, as well as any other activities you might be interested in pursuing that promote community health and fitness.
